What is the difference between a Counsellor and a Psychologist?

Counsellor
- A counsellor is typically trained to provide guidance and support to individuals, couples, families, or groups who are experiencing various challenges or seeking personal development.
- They often work with clients facing issues such as stress, relationship difficulties, grief, or other life transitions.
- Counsellors employ various therapeutic techniques to help clients explore their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours, facilitating self-awareness and positive change.
- Training to become a counsellor in Australia typically involves completing a recognized counselling qualification from a reputable institution, which may include supervised practical experience.

Psychologist
- Psychologists are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health issues and psychological disorders using evidence-based interventions.
- Psychologists may work with individuals, couples, families, or groups, employing various therapeutic techniques such as psychoanalysis, or humanistic approaches.
- In Australia, psychologists must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and adhere to strict ethical and professional standards.

While there may be some overlap in the services provided by counsellors, psychotherapists, and psychologists, each profession has its unique training, qualifications, and scope of practice. It's essential for individuals seeking therapy to consider their specific needs and preferences when choosing a practitioner.
As the Counselling profession is not recognised in Australia - Ensure the Counsellor you choose is registered with ACA or PACFA and is Qualified at Level 4 (Bachelor level - Over 100 hours of client work with a degree in Counselling).
